Keðjuverkun is on Skólavörðustígur 40 close to the big grey church Hallgrímskirkja. We are open every thursday and sunday between 2 and 6.
What do we do as a collective?
- Stripclean bikes and categorize the parts in designated containers
- Help people fix their own bikes and give them access to our bike-parts inventory if something needs to be replaced.
- Distribute flyers and posters.
- Organize concerts, critical mass rides and other events.
- The bike-mechanic stereotype needs to be assassinated. You don´t need to have a penis or be heterosexual to understand bike anatomy.
… and the list continues.
Why do we need a bike collective?
- Living in Reykjavik and it´s suburbs without a car is possible and creating a pressure group is important to have an effect on the public transit and riders rightsBuilding a bike from parts is self-empowering and access to free bike building workshops is non-existent in Iceland.
- The 21 gear mountain bike culture is dominant when all you need could be something as simple as an inexpensive single speed bike to travel within the city. Good luck finding one at the bike shops.
- Shitloads of montain-bikes are thrown away everyday and we are picking them up. Believe me, they can be easily fixed and reused by converting them to simple durable single-gear bikes that work.
